Description:

This is a truly outstanding and highly desirable Luftwaffe Survival Drilling that was manufactured by J.P. Sauer and Sons. The commercial grade drillings were issued to Luftwaffe aircraft operating in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater as a survival weapon for aircrew. Each drilling was fitted with a special aluminum case that contained a leather sling, shotgun and rifle cartridges, and appropriate cleaning equipment. The case has a leather luggage type handle and is painted dark gray. The top of the case is stenciled: "Drilling M30/mit Munition u.Zubehor/ce" in three lines. The case interior is natural aluminum and divided into sections for the barrel, receiver, ammunition, and accessories. A list of the contents of the case is stenciled on the inside of the lid. The M30 Drilling is a commercial grade J.P. Sauer gun with Luftwaffe markings and proofs. The barrels have a commercial quality rust blue finish and the receiver, trigger guard, pistol grip cap and forearm furniture have a vivid case hardened finish. The receiver, trigger guard, pistol grip cap, and forearm furniture are decorated with restrained but finely executed scroll engraving. A large Sauer, "SS" logo is engraved on the bottom of the receiver. The stock and forearm are highly figured European walnut with an oil finish. The left side of the butt has a raised, oval cheek piece and the pistol grip and forearm have sharp, deeply cut, checkering. The buttplate is black plastic with horizontal serrations and the Sauer logo in a circle in the center. The rifle barrel has a set trigger and a rear sight aperture on the barrel marked "100" that elevates when the selector on the receiver tang is moved to the rifle barrel. A safety lever is located on the left side of the stock. The shotgun barrels have a raised, matted, rib with a brass bead front sight. The rifle under-barrel and the stock are fitted with sling swivels. A large Luftwaffe eagle/swastika insignia is stamped on the right side of the stock and on the right shotgun barrel ahead of the breech. The Luftwaffe "stick eagle/2" proof/inspection mark is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug. The serial number is located receiver tang, the left receiver rail and on the bottom of the rifle barrel. The partial serial number, "8858", is tamped on the inside of the forearm. The rifle caliber "9.3 x 74R" is located in an oval on the top of the sighting rib and on the left side of the chamber. The shotgun barrel gauge, "12/65" is stamped on the bottom of both barrels. Commercial "eagle/N" proof marks are stamped on the bottom of the shotgun and rifle barrel chambers and on the right receiver rail. "KRUPP - LAUFSTAHL" is stamped on the bottom of the rifle barrel and on the top of both shotgun barrels. The Sauer "SuS" logo is stamped on the left side of the rifle barrel chamber and on the right receiver rail. The J.P. Sauer address is located on the circumference of both shotgun barrels and on the sides of the receiver. The case is complete with the rare russet leather sling, the original, black cardboard box of cleaning equipment, two boxes of RWS rifle cartridges (17 rounds), and the original instruction manual entitled "Drilling M.30" dated "1941". The cleaning gear consists of: (1) a three-piece jointed wood cleaning rod with brass tip in the original wrapping paper, (2) a cotton shotgun barrel swab, (3) a fiber shotgun bore brush, (4) a smaller wire bore brush, and (5) a brass rifle bore brush.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The drilling has 99% of the bright original blue and vivid casehardened finish. The casehardened finish has brilliant colors and exhibits only slight storage and handling marks. The stock and forearm are both in excellent condition with only very minor storage marks and sharp checkering. The buttplate has minimal wear. The Luftwaffe markings on the stock and barrel and the various Sauer marks and proofs are extremely crisp. The accessories are in fine condition; only three rifle cartridges are missing. The case interior is excellent. The case exterior is in fine condition; the painted finish has the numerous small nicks and scratches associated with actual use; 60% of the original dark gray paint is intact. The markings on the lid are faint, but legible. The leather handle is intact. This is an outstanding example of a Sauer M.30 Luftwaffe Survival Drilling in exceptional, unissued condition with original case and accessories.
