This stunning Winchester Model 1886 was manufactured in 1893 and was later updated and elaborately custom embellished by Master Engraver Jim Lowe of Virginia. He worked for the famous New York City based luxury jewelry and specialty retailer Tiffany & Co. in addition to his independent work as a firearms engraver. His "J. LOWE" signature is just behind the trigger. The rifle features stunning Winchester factory style engraving including a highly detailed scene of a grizzly bear on the prowl in a panel scene on the left side of the frame. Most of the remaining engraving consists of scroll patterns and decorative borders. The modern replacement barrel has a block mounted ghost ring front sight, three-leaf "express" rear sight, "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" marked ahead of the rear sight, and "50 EX" marked on top at the breech. The upper tang has the model designation, and the patent marking and serial number are on the lower tang. The rifle is equipped with a plain trigger, half-magazine, carbine style forearm and barrel band, fancy grade walnut pistol grip stock with carbine buttplate, and style "E" checkering.
Very fine as professionally engraved/upgraded to current configuration with crisp engraving, 85% plus blue finish remaining, 98% plus of the vibrant case colors remaining, and generally minor overall wear. The wood is also very fine and has crisp checkering, minor flakes and chips at the edges of the wrist, smooth finish, and very attractive figure on the butt. Mechanically fine.
