Manufactured in the first main-run production block of M1 Carbines from GM's Inland Division. The stock sling inlet of this M1 Carbine is stamped with inventory marking "CVE-70" indicating it was aboard the U.S.S. Fanshaw Bay (CVE-70), a Casablanca-class escort carrier of the U.S. Navy that was commissioned in December 1943, served in support of the Mariana and Palau Islands Campaign, was strongly combat active in various conflicts including the battle of Saipan, the battle off Samar, the battle of Okinawa, and was decommissioned after World War II in August 1946. "N" marked blade front sight and "S" marked Type I flip-up rear sight, with an Inland "9-42" barrel, unmarked Type I barrel band, blue finished "IO" flat top bolt, milled Inland trigger housing, checkered push button safety, "MN" magazine catch, "PI" operating rod and "U" magazine. Fitted with an early Inland high wood stock with an "I" oiler cut and stamped with "IOIO", flaming Ordnance bomb and crossed cannons in the sling inlet surrounding the "CVE-70" inventory nomenclature, and a two-rivet handguard. Includes an olive drab green canvas sling and oiler.
Exceptionally fine, retains 85% original parkerized finish with a smooth brown appearance typical of a Navy issued gun, 90% original blue finish on the bolt, with sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. 99% original blue finish remains on the magazine. Stock is very fine with defined edges, numerous scattered scratches and dents, and crisp stampings. Mechanically excellent. This historic Inland M1 Carbine, five-digit serial number 23000, with ties to being aboard the U.S.S. Fanshaw Bay is a desirable item for any World War II collector!
