Description:

This is a rare version of as cased Remington-Rider New Model Belt revolver in that it includes a matching percussion cylinder and a metallic cartridge cylinder. Both cylinders are numbered to the gun, leaving no doubt that this is a factory set. It is definitely the only cased example we have seen and is considered to be the finest known example. The New Model Belt revolver was introduced in 1863 as a percussion sidearm with subsequent production examples being factory installed with a two-piece breech loading metallic cartridge cylinder. The top barrel flat has the later production three-line marking: "PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858/E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A./NEW MODEL." The matching serial number is marked on the left side of the grip frame under the grip, barrel, left grip panel, percussion cylinder and both pieces to the cartridge cylinder. The partitioned factory case is lined in royal purple velvet and is fitted with the original and scarce cartridge block, which holds 25 "U" head stamped 38 rimfire cartridges. The case contains the following accessories: rare Remington marked Eley Brothers percussion cap tin with caps, double face eagle powder flask, lead rounds and double cavity (conical and ball) bullet mold. Includes copies of Jackson Arms catalogs. Provenance: The William Florence Collection; The Norm Flayderman Collection; Property of a Gentleman

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver in percussion configuration retains 90% bright original high polish blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The barrel marking is faint. Obviously a factory error due to use of a worn out roll die. The hammer and trigger retain 60% original case colors. The cartridge cylinder retains 85% original blue finish. The grips are very fine with a number of minor pressure dents and scratches and retaining most of the varnish. The case is exceptionally fine showing some minor handling/storage marks and some high spot wear on the lining. An extremely rare factory cased dual cylinder Remington-Rider New Model Belt revolver worthy of the most prestigious museum firearm collections.
