Description:

This revolver and its consecutively numbered partner in the next lot were manufactured in 1957 and were listed as lots 5 and 6 in "The Robert Petersen Collection of Magnificent Firearms" in 2003. Robert Petersen of Los Angeles, California, started "Hot Rod," a magazine for car enthusiasts, and built Petersen Publishing, which printed 39 monthly periodicals, including "Guns & Ammo," and "Sports Afield." His collection of 425 firearms was donated to the National Firearms Museum after his death and fills the permanent 2,000 square foot Petersen Gallery that was opened to the public in the fall of 2010 at the NRA Museum. There is one common theme: highest quality. The Petersen Gallery is considered to be one of the finest sporting arms collections in the world. Very few guns from Petersen's collection have made it to private hands. Few consecutively numbered pairs of Second Generation SAAs were manufactured. According to Wilkerson's "The Post-War Colt Single-Action Revolver, 1955-1975," 116 consecutive sets were manufactured in this configuration out of a total of 1,129 consecutive sets known to have been manufactured. The .38 Special and .45 Colt were the first calibers reintroduced in the Second Generation era. Only 6,506 were manufactured in this configuration compared to 16,387 in the same barrel length and finish in .45 Colt, and only one in every six Second Generation Single Action Army revolvers was in .38 special per Wilkerson. Production in this caliber was fairly limited thanks in part to the introduction of the .357 Magnum cartridge to the line in 1960. A consecutively serialized Second Generation Single Action Army revolver in such incredibly high condition as this one is extremely scarce! Includes the original Colt black box and bore brush. Provenance: The Robert Petersen Collection

Rating Definition:

Near new in box, retains 99% plus of the original blue and casehardened finishes with only the slightest handling marks, a faint cylinder drag line, and crisp grip checkering. Mechanically excellent. The box is very fine with some light corner/edge wear. This is an incredibly rare opportunity to own a rare variation of the Colt Single Action Army in extremely high condition revolver that was once part of the Robert Petersen Collection!
