Description:During the 19th and 20th centuries, canes became incredibly popular as a status symbol, especially among upper class gentlemen in Western Europe and North America. This specific cane is a fantastic example of that, and is relief carved with the initials of a previous owner. The grip has been masterfully relief carved with the bust of the Greek/Roman god Hermes/Mercury wearing his winged petasos. Hermes was the "Messenger God" of Mt. Olympus, symbolizing the crossing of boundaries in his role as a guide between the two realms of gods and humans. The lower portion of the grip features an "ACS" monogram, which are likely the initials of the original owner. The relief carved monogram is a rarely seen customized flourish that denotes the great status by the original owner. There is a thin brass band where the grip joins the smooth ebonized shaft which is tipped with German silver and iron. It measures approximately 40 inches overall.
Rating Definition:Very fine, the grip having a few scattered hairline age cracks and crisp carving overall, attractively aged patina on the brass, some scattered light crazing and handling marks on the shaft, and a series of minor dents in the tip.
