Frederick Volck (German-Confederate American: 1833-1891). This bronze bust statue was executed of the then President Grant in the same manner of General Lee; which Volck created in 1863. This bronze was sculpted in 1869 when General Grant became President Grant. General Lee, the state VA, as well as Volck were grateful for how General Grant treated General Lee & his men when General Lee surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox, VA. In 1865. The statue of General Grant is in his old army uniform. This statue was a way for the southern people say thank you to General Grant and hope President Grant would help the southern people in the Reconstruction Period of Grant's term in office. It is recorded in President Grant's diary that General Lee made several trips to Washington, DC to talk with President Grant and one of these trips the bust of General Grant was given to him by General Lee. The dimensions of the large bronze bust are: 18 1/2x11x8 inches, weight 31lbs.
