The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was sold on November 21, 1856 as the No. 2 of a pair to the Earl of Litchfield. Featuring London proofed damascus barrels with platinum banded and plugged breeches, "J. PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON" signed on the concave rib which has a bead front sight, "2" on the rib and upper tang, "PURDEY" signed locks, scroll and floral engraving on the locks and furniture including the buttplate, matching serial numbers on the lower tang and bottom of the barrels, checkered straight wrist stock with some nice figure, and a 14 1/2 inch length of pull.
Very good as partially restored with nearly all of the professionally refinished brown and distinct damascus patterns on the barrels, mostly gray patina on the locks and furniture, minor oxidation/pitting at the breech, crisp engraving, replaced nipples, refinished stock with crisp recut checkering, some small chips at the edges of the forearm, and minor overall wear. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
