This sword is similar to the "Solomon Jackson" Eagle Type II sabers from c. 1805-1810 shown in "The American Eagle-Pommel Sword: The Early Years - 1794-1830" by Mobray on pages 110 and 111 and has a curved 34 1/2 inch overall length measured straight including a 29 3/8 inch blade (also measured straight). The blade has gold highlighted floral and martial etching which included "Warranted" on the right and an eagle and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" design on the left, niter blue backgrounds terminating in leaf patterns, and a "T" stamped on the left ricasso. The gilded brass hilt has a spread wing eagle languet design, five ball knuckle guard, and distinctive eagle pommel with capstan rivet. Like the example on page 110, the "reeded" bone grip fits against rather into the pommel. The scabbard has brass fittings.
Fine with 60% original niter blue and gold, silver-gray patina and minor staining on the balance of the blade, traces of gilding on the hilt, aged patina on the brass hilt and scabbard fittings, some crackling and flexing on the leather, and mild wear on the grip. Provenance: Jay Reid Collection.
