Description:

This exceptional factory engraved Model 1849 Pocket was manufactured in 1860, directly preceding the Civil War. It has the dot marking by the serial numbers which was used to denote factory engraved revolvers produced between 1849 and 1861. Note the wolf head pattern on the hammer, eagle head amongst the scrolls on the left side of the barrel lug, and 75% plus coverage floral scrollwork on a punch dot background are patterns that match other Gustave Young engraved Model 1849 Pocket revolvers. Young worked for Colt from 1852 until the mid to late 1860s. "COLTS/PATENT" is hand engraved on the left side of the frame. The top of the barrel is stamped with the two-line Hartford address. The cylinder has the stagecoach scene. The hardwood partitioned case contains a few lead bullets, Eley's cap tin, double face eagle powder flask, and blued two cavity bullet model with sprue cutter marked "COLTS/PATENT."

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains 40% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The cylinder retains nearly all of the scene and slight traces of original blue, otherwise a smooth brown patina. Slight traces of original case colors remain, otherwise the loading lever, hammer and frame have faded to gray. The grip straps retain 70% original silver plating with the exposed brass having an attractive appearance. The engraving is crisp. The grip is very fine with some minor handling marks and retaining most of the original varnish. Mechanically fine. The case is fine with minor handling/storage marks and high spot wear on the lining. The accessories are very fine with the bullet mold retaining 60% of the bright original blue finish and the flask retaining most of the lacquer/gilt.
