Produced by the Providence Tool Company circa 1866 - 1871. Originally developed during the Civil War, many of these rifles were exported for foreign military use. This -rifle has the "WC" cartouche on the stock used on the exported rifles and carbines and German "crown/V" on-hand proofs on top of the barrel and frame at the breech indicating it was in Germany in the 1890s, possibly as a captured French rifle given they purchased 33,000 Spanish-pattern Peabodys (possibly chambered for .43 Spanish). There is also a "T" or cross marking on the top of the stock wrist. The rifle features blade front and folding ladder rear sights, small inspection marks, and "PEABODY'S PAT./JULY 22, 1862/MAN'F'D BY/PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROV. R.I." on the left side of the frame.
Very fine with 85% original blue, 90% original casehardened finish, minor edge wear, some residue on the heel of the buttplate, minor oxidation, dark oil finish on the stock, mild dings and scratches, and general mild wear. Mechanically fine.
