Manufactured in 1908 and subsequently masterfully embellished by master gunsmith and engraver Walter Kolouch. The receiver is profusely floral scroll engraved and features scroll gold inlaid scroll borders and fantastic North American game scenes in relief gold along with a flourish of gold inlaid floral scrollwork on the underside. A bull elk calling to three cows is featured on the left side of the receiver, and a bull elk confronting a wolf is featured on the right side of the receiver. These wonderful gold relief inlays are large and highly detailed, leaving no doubt to Kolouch's talents as a master engraver. The forend cap, bolt, hammer, lever and buttplate are engraved to match. A gold inlaid bighorn ram's head is featured on the buttplate tang. The non-standard 28 inch barrel is adorned with flourishes of scrollwork at the muzzle, magazine band, forend cap, rear sight and breech along with double gold inlaid bands at the muzzle and breech. Scrollwork flanks the two-line address/patent date marking stamped on the top barrel flat, and "38 W.C.F." is in flush gold on the upper left barrel flat. The base of the elevation adjustable rear sight, magazine cap and magazine band are also scroll engraved. Winchester factory oval proofs are surrounded by scrollwork on top of the barrel and receiver at the breech. Kolouch has signed his masterpiece amongst the upper tang three-line model/trade mark: "ENG. W. KOLOUCH/McMINNVILLE, OR." The forend cap, bolt, hammer, receiver, lever, and buttplate are casehardened, and the barrel and magazine tube are blued. The nicely figured walnut forearm and straight grip stock feature fine multi-point checkering and flourishes of carved floral scrollwork. The underside of the buttstock has "RE" engraved on a large initial oval.
Very fine as elaborately custom embellished and upgraded to current configuration by master engraver Walter Kolouch, retaining 99% plus of the blue and casehardened finishes with limited handling marks. The wood is also vey fine with some minor dings near the stock toe and crisp fine checkering and carving. Mechanically excellent. A true modern work of firearms art by renowned master engraver Walter Kolouch.
