Manufactured in 1853. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line New York City address inside brackets, and the left side of the frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT." The number "2" is stamped near the serial number on the cylinder and barrel. The cylinder has the stagecoach hold up scene. The butt is script inscribed with the name "E. Manchester." E. Manchester has yet to be identified. An interesting potential contender is E.F. Manchester who was in the business of harness making and had a storefront in Fall River, MA. Matching full or partial serial numbers are on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, loading lever, wedge, and arbor pin. The hardwood partitioned case comes with a double face eagle powder flask, several lead balls, Eley Brothers cap tin, package of Colt pocket pistol combustible envelope cartridges, case key, and brass two cavity "COLT'S/PATENT" marked bullet mold.
Very fine. The barrel retains 85% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The cylinder retains 50% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina and retains nearly all of the scene. 60% correct muted original case colors remain on the loading lever, hammer and frame, otherwise faded to gray. The grip straps retain 90% original silver plating. The grip is near excellent with a tiny chip near the bottom (left side), some minor handling marks and nearly all of the original varnish remaining. Mechanically fine. The case is fine with minor handling/storage marks and typical high spot wear on the lining.
