This Sharps Model 1874 rifle features a heavyweight full octagon from esteemed barrel maker William "Bill" Large with a dovetailed globe and pin front sight, no rear sight mounted on the barrel, classic "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN" and "OLD RELIABLE" engraved markings on the top barrel flat, caliber notation on the top flat at the breech, and wedges of light scroll engraving at the breech end. The underside of the barrel (under the forearm) is marked "C.E. DURHAM/GUNSMITH/7-1-72" and "W.M. LARGE". The casehardened is marked "SHARPS RIFLE CO" over a faint patent date on the left side and is fitted with double set triggers, vernier peep sight on the upper tang, and has bright nitre blue screws. The action is fully engraved with tight flowing scroll and features a gold inlaid prospector panning for gold on the left side and a small engraved American bison scene on the lock plate. The lever and tangs are engraved to match and the lower tang is signed "ENGRAVED BY/JOHN ROHNER". Smooth forearm and checkered straight grip buttstock with matching casehardened and engraved buttplate.
Very fine as master embellished by John Rohner, with 99% blue finish remaining on the barrel, sharp engraving, and some light handling marks. The action has 95% vibrant restored case colors with crisp detailed engraving, softened original markings, and some light silvering on the high edges. The wood is very fine with some scattered small dings, crisp checkering, and some small gaps visible around the buttplate. Mechanically excellent.
