The Colt Model 1860 Army was the primary handgun of the Union Army during the Civil War. Over 125,000 were delivered before the famous fire at the Colt factory in February 1864. This one was manufactured in 1863 under contract with the U.S. Ordnance Department. The three screw frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side and is cut for a shoulder stock. The barrel has the one-line "NEW-YORK" address. The cylinder has the standard patent markings and naval scene. The wedge is numbered to a different gun ("8588"). A script letter cartouche is stamped on each side of the grip. Matching full or partial serial numbers are on the frame, barrel, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, and cylinder pin.
Very fine. 50% original blue remains on the barrel, traces of original blue remain on the cylinder and 60% original blue remains on the back strap with the balance a smooth brown patina. Nearly all of the cylinder scene remains. 70% original case colors remain on the hammer and frame and traces of original case colors remain on the loading lever. The brass front grip strap has an attractive appearance. The grip is very fine showing some high edge wear and some scattered minor handling marks. The cartouches are crisp. Mechanically excellent. A very fine example of a desirable Civil War U.S. Model 1860 revolver.
