Description:

This U.S. Walker Replacement Colt First Model Dragoon Revolver was one of 300 manufactured to replace failed Colt Walker revolvers as part of the Colt Walker Contract for 1,000 revolvers. dated November 2, 1847. This revolver has the combination of oval cylinder stops, elongated Walker style rear grip strap, and Walker-style square-back brass trigger guard which identify the Walker Replacement First Model Dragoon Revolvers. The revolver has a 7 1/2-inch part-round/part-octagon barrel, brass trigger guard and back strap, and one-piece walnut grip with elongated butt angled down rear grip strap (made from leftover Walker parts). The barrel has been period modified with a dove-tail mounted, nickel-silver, front sight blade and dove-tail mounted fixed rear sight. The cylinder originally had a single safety pin and is roll engraved with the 'Ranger and Indian' fight scene and "MODEL U.S.M.R./COLT'S PATENT". It also has the proper compression marks around the cylinder for this model. The top barrel flat is roll stamped with the legend: "{ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY}" in one line reading toward the muzzle. "COLT'S/PATENT/U.S." is roll-stamped near the center of the left side of the frame. The hammer is a period replacement which lacks the factory knurling on the spur and sight notch in the lip. Small "P" Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on: (1) the top of the back strap, (2) bottom of the trigger guard, (3) cylinder and (4) left side of the loading lever. The full serial number is stamped in tiny numerals on the: (1) bottom of the barrel lug, (2) bottom of the frame, (3) bottom of the trigger guard, (4) bottom of the back strap and (5) side of the cylinder. The partial serial number "799" is stamped on the underside of the cylinder pin. All of the visible serial numbers match. No serial number is visible on the loading lever but it appears to be original to the revolver. The wedge is not serial numbered. No visible markings remain on the one-piece walnut grip. The period replacement front sight, rear sight and hammer indicate that this military contract First Dragoon revolver saw military and civilian use.

Rating Definition:

Good. With the exception of the period replacement front and rear sights and hammer, the revolver remains in the original configuration and shows moderate wear. The finish has aged to an attractive silver-gray patina. The barrel and loading lever have scattered handling marks. The barrel legend and serial numbers are crisp. The cylinder retains half of the Ranger and Indian scene with lightly visible "MODEL U.S.M.R./COLT'S PATENT" markings and clear serial number. The rear face of the cylinder and percussion nipples show moderate flash pitting. The single safety pin has been flattened from use. The frame has a silver-gray patina with scattered, minor, age spotting. The "COLT'S/PATENT", "U.S." property mark and serial number are crisp. The hammer has moderate flash pitting. The brass back strap and trigger guard are in good overall condition with scattered handling marks. The refinished one-piece grip remains in good overall condition with small chips on the lower front edges and a few handling marks. The action is tight and functions well. This is a solid representative example of a scarce and historic U.S. Contract Colt First Model Dragoon Revolver that saw military and civilian use.
