This scarce unopened skin pack of .44 caliber cartridges for Colt 3rd Model Dragoon or early Model 1860 Fluted Army revolvers was manufactured by Colt's Cartridge Works. The cartridge box appears to be manufactured of wood with the complete original paper wrapping/label with the opening wire present and appears to contain the full compliment of six cartridges. The ink stamped label is marked "6" by hand with "12" crossed out and "Combustible Envelope/CARTRIDGES/MADE OF HAZARD'S POWDER/EXPRESSLY FOR/COL. COLT'S PATENT/REVOLVING HOLSTER PISTOL CARBINE/ADDRESS/COLT'S CARTRIDGE WORKS,/HARTFORD, CONN./U.S. AMERICA." This very scarce "skin pack" of cartridges could be cased with a late production 3rd Model Dragoon with shoulder stock or an early Colt Model 1860 Army with shoulder stock (see, for example, “Percussion Ammunition Packets, 1845-1888: Union, Confederate & European" by Malloy, Thomas, and White on pages 12 and 20). Also see Rapley's “Colt Percussion Accoutrements 1834 – 1873” on pages 390-391 for a packet (#C18) with a similar label (“12” has been inked over and a “6” handwritten). #C18 is listed as "suitable for a cased pair of Third Model Dragoons with detachable stock, either 7 1/2 or 8 inch barrels. Circa 1859. Caliber .44."
Fine overall, retaining almost all of the original paper packaging with some scattered mild staining, a few minor tears, and mostly crisp black lettering on the label. Condition of the interior wooden box and cartridges not verified. A desirable Colt accessory!
