The serial number on the receiver dates to 1967. The only other marking on the carbine apart from the serial number is a Winchester factory oval proof on the barrel at the breech. It is fitted with dovetailed blade front and elevation adjustable notch rear sights and mounted with a nicely figured, slightly ill-fitting, smooth forearm and straight grip stock with an impressed-checkered steel shotgun buttplate. The included Winchester Museum letter points out the lack of markings on the carbine, noting that this signifies that it was not intended as a production arm, and that the "trapper carbines" reintroduced in 1980 have round barrels unlike this example. Other documentation notes that this is the first of seven prototypes developed before the 1980 reintroduction of the trapper.
Excellent, retains 99% plus original blue finish with a few scattered very light handling marks. The nicely figured wood is very fine with a few very light handling marks, the forearm slightly proud, and some small gaps visible around the tangs. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Brandhorst Collection.
