Developed in 1944, the M1C was the first production-level sniper variant of the M1 Garand semi-automatic rifle. While highly effective as a sniper weapon, the manufacturing process was rather involved, requiring a Springfield receiver to be selected off the production line before heat treating, shipped to Griffin & Howe for base installation, and then returned to the armory to complete the process. While phased out of production in favor of the M1D, which could be produced in-house by Springfield using finished and surplus M1 rifles, the M1C saw sniper duty through Korea and into Vietnam. Less than 8,000 were completed during WWII, with a batch of converted but unassembled receivers finished up circa 1951-1953 for Korea, resulting in a total production of less than 13,000. This example has a receiver originally manufactured in January of 1945, with a "1-55" dated Springfield barrel, "DRC" marked windage drum, "NI-C" elevation drum, Springfield bolt, hammer, trigger housing, safety and relief cut operating rod. The scope rail is secured to the receiver with the proper two-pin/three-screw arrangement and matching numbered "3373554" on the underside, the ring base is stamped "3310222" on the right with the Griffin & Howe address on top, and the scope is serial numbered "35552" with a Danish "crown/FKF" proof on top; while not explicitly documented, Denmark made active use of the Garand and its variants as service weapons in the aftermath of WWII, including a number of snipers. Smooth pistol grip stock, with a circled serifed "P" stamp on the underside, Department of Defense "eagle" on the left side, tan canvas "FKF" sling and a checkered steel buttplate. The included CMP certificate identifies this rifle by serial number as an M1C sold in 2011 and a tag (NOTE: contents not verified or guaranteed) that gives a muzzle and throat gauge reading of 2.
Very fine as arsenal upgraded, with 95% of the deep, near black parkerization, showing some mild cycling and handling wear overall. The stock is very good, with scuffing and denting. The scope shows mild external wear, with good optics. Mechanically excellent.
