With browned damascus barrels signed “C.D. TANNER & SOHN IN HANNOVER” in gold on the raised concave rib which also bears a large bead front sight, the tubes each inlaid with gold scrollwork inhabited by a silver inlaid bird and a silver arrow, two gold lines are inlaid at the breeches. Border and scroll engraved action decorated on each side with a differing panel scene of game birds in their naturalistic habitat, the long top strap with a chiselled panel depicting two hares with a gold inlaid border. Elaborate backaction locks each profusely engraved with scrollwork and a chiselled panel with gold inlaid border respectively depicting a running fox and a hound, and hammer engraved with further scrollwork inhabited by a gold inlaid bird and with reptilian nose with gold inlaid eyes and teeth. Mounts decorated en suite comprising a flat fronted trigger guard with silver inlaid border lines and gold inlaid rabbit on the bow, and butt plate engraved with the serial number and inlaid with a gold pheasant on the tang. Well figured walnut straight hand butt with checkered grip and raised cheekpiece.
This highly attractive German gun retains 97% rebrowned finish to the barrels, the gold and silver inlay remain in very good condition with minimal pin-prick sized losses, scattered minor corrosion pock marking visible beneath the finish. Action, locks and mounts mostly a light grey patina with darker discolored areas mostly confined to the forearm, action lever, trigger guard tang and butt plate. Engraving remains clear and sharp throughout. The stock has numerous age related storage and handling bruises and marks, checkering remains well defined, the right side of the butt with old filled knot in the grain.
