Description:Manufactured in 1837. The barrel, ramrod, swivel, barrel band, trigger guard, buttcap and back strap were "national armory bright". The lock plate, reinforced hammer, frizzen, barrel tang and trigger were color casehardened. The lock plate has a removable brass pan. The stock is straight grain, oil-finished black walnut. The lock plate has an eagle head above "A.W. WATERS/MILBURY. MS./1837." The left side of the barrel has "U.S./JCS/P." "H" and "K" Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. The left stock flat is stamped with the Ordnance sub-inspectors and final inspectors marks which consist of the script initials "JH" and "HKC."
Rating Definition:Fine. The barrel retains 50% "national armory bright" finish. There is considerable flash pitting on the barrel surrounding the flash hole and some heavier pitting on the muzzle. The bright finish on the ramrod, barrel band, side plate, trigger guard and buttcap have a mottled plum patina. The lock plate, hammer, frizzen, barrel tang and trigger retain 50% subdued case colors with the balance faded to a plum. The top jaw screw is an old replacement, and the tang screw is a period replacement. The stock is very good with sharp edges on the lock mortise, left flat and barrel channel. There is a small hairline crack that extends 1/2 inch from the tip of the lock plate. The inspection marks are crisp.
