This finely engraved Remington double is pictured and identified by serial number on page 161 of "Remington Double Shotguns" by Charles G. Semmer. The photo captions state the shotgun was shipped in 1898, and further notes that the author believes the shotgun to have been ordered as an up-grade, due to the rarely seen game scene on the trigger plate. Chain pattern Damascus barrels with a flat matte rib, single bead sight, chambers measured at 2 3/4 inches with automatic ejectors, standard markings on the flats, and "26/34" pellet count markings on the rear barrel lug. Casehardened box lock action features very fine floral and scroll engraving with "Remington Arms Co." banners on the sides and a wonderfully detailed swan and duck scene on the underside. Matching engraved trigger guard and tangs, dual triggers, and automatic sliding tang safety. Multi-point checkered walnut pistol grip stock with carved spear point accents on the checkered flats, Anson push button forearm latch with engraved fittings, scalloped horn grip cap, blank silver initial oval, and solid rubber Del Greco marked recoil pad.
Fine. The barrels have an attractive blue/brown patina with 70% highly visible, well defined chain Damascus pattern, some small dings, traces of surface oxidation at the muzzles, and some light edge wear on the rib. The action has 30% original case colors in the protected areas with the remainder a mostly gray patina with well defined engraving, and handling wear on the guard. The wood is also fine with a freshened oil finish, crisp checkering, added pad, several chips on the forend and small dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
