Description:Only around 6,000 or so of these pistols were manufactured in the 1870s and 1880s, primarily under contract for the U.S. Army, and those in high condition like this one are especially valuable. These were the last single shot U.S. martial pistols. They were inspected by Curtis R. Stickney whose initials are on the left side of the grip. The "P S" marked on the left side of the frame also stand for "Proofed" and "Stickney." The matching serial number is on the upper tang and inside the grip, and the assembly number "5683" is also on the grip straps. It has the standard fixed sights.
Rating Definition:Excellent with 90% plus original blue and 97% plus vivid casehardened finish, a coat of protective varnish over the case colors, minor scratches mainly on the side of the frame, strong original niter blue on the trigger and screws, and mostly bright hammer and breechblock under the varnish. The wood is also excellent and has a crisp cartouche, minor dings at the edges of the butt, and light handling and storage marks. Mechanically excellent. This pistol was clearly hardly if ever used and has been well cared for.
