This is a mid-production WWII rifle that was produced by the Kokura Arsenal. The top of the receiver is roll marked with the standard Japanese royal chrysanthemum over the Kana markings for a Type 97 rifle. It has the late war tangent rear sight without the anti-aircraft wings that is marked 4-24 (400-2,400 meters), stamped front barrel band, and late production unnumbered rough cast lower barrel band with the monopod block (without monopod). It has a matching turned down sniper bolt that is in the white with a matching extractor and cocking knob. It has a one piece short handguard and a two-piece hardwood buttstock with finger grooves on the sides, no drain holes and a flat steel buttplate. It is fitted with the correct earlier small type 2.5x power telescopic scope marked "2.5 X 10 (degrees)" over the Japanese factory five point star symbol over serial number 3695. The side of the scope base is stamped with two Japanese Kana markings, and the base is numbered "5108". The scope comes with an original small hard canvas scope case without the shoulder strap. The rifle also comes with its original WWII Japanese bright polish cleaning rod, leather sling and a late WWII all blued Japanese Type 30 hook bayonet with metal scabbard and a small wooden identification plate attached.
Very fine with 85% plus of the original blue finish overall with high spot wear with the bolt body and extractor in the white. The stock and handguard are both in very fine condition with a nice matching light brown color showing numerous small/light handling marks and pressure dents on the sides with a heavier gouge on the underside by the lower sling swivel. The scope also retains 90% of its black painted type finish with clear optics that show some heavier specs inside on the reticle. The hard canvas scope case is in fine condition with solid stitching and a weak leather tab. The bayonet is in fine condition also with 85% of its blue finish overall.
