Description:

This is a very fine example of a WWII Model 1928A1 Thompson Submachine gun produced by the Savage Arms Corp. These Thompson SMGs were the quintessential classic submachine guns used by the early federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and then again by military starting in the early 1930s and throughout WWII and Korea. This particular submachine gun is a mid-production model manufactured under contract for the U.S. Army by the Savage Arms Corp. and was at some time in England as the top of the receiver and bolt have a very small "crown/GP" proof mark of the London proof house. It retains all the earlier features such: the original 10 1/2 inch barrel with cooling fins, Cutts/Auto Ordnance marked compensator, the fully adjustable Lyman tangent rear sight and the detachable walnut buttstock. The front left side of the receiver is stamped with a circled "GEG/small U.S. Ordnance Bomb proof" over U.S. Ordnance Inspector initials "RLB" for Col. Roy L. Bowlin of the Rochester N.Y. Ordnance District. It is also marked "U.S. MODEL OF 1928 A1/NO. S-22888". The left rear is marked: "THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN/CALIBRE 45 AUTOMATIC CARTRIDGE". The obverse has the two-line markings of "AUTO-ORDNANCE CORPORATION/BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, U.S.A.", and towards the rear it has eight lines of patent numbers. In front of the rear sight, it is stamped with the distinctive "Bullet" logo of the Thompson Company with "TOMMY GUN" marked to the right side. The matching numbered lower receiver/trigger housing group is also numbered "NO. S-228881". The gun is complete with one "L" type 50 round drum Auto-Ordnance drum magazine, a 20 round stick magazine and a black nylon carrying case with the yellow/black and white "Thompson/Auto-Ordnance" logo embroidered on the side.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% plus of a two tone, original matte phosphate blue finish on the receiver and lower trigger housing, a higher polish blue finish on the barrel, minor/light edge and high spot wear overall, and the bolt also having a matte blue type finish showing minor cycling wear. The wood components are all in very fine condition aside from a crack in the rear of the angled foregrip and have a nice matching medium brown color overall, minor handling marks on the sides in some areas, and some minor compression dents on the underside of the stock by the lower sling swivel. NOTE: This item is restricted as a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) that is classified as a "Curios or Relic" as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 478. Additional Information: Note this desirable SMG has a matching lower/trigger housing.
