The Third Model Dragoon can be quickly distinguished by its round trigger guard and was the most widely used of Colt's massive "horse pistols" that began with the famous Colt Walker. Around 10,500 Third Models were manufactured in 1851 to 1861. Many of these were used in the West and during the Civil War. This commercial revolver was manufactured in 1853 and has a German silver blade front sight, "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY-" on the barrel, standard cylinder scene and patent markings, and matching serial numbers. Formerly in the Will Hoffeld collection, purchased from Donald E Stolp in Dec. 1962. A "WH" (Wilbur Hoff) and "287" collection tag is on the trigger guard.
Very good plus with smooth dark patinas throughout, mostly distinct markings, general marks and scratches, and mild overall wear. The cylinder scene is fine and mostly visible. The grip is fine and has moderate lower edge wear, light scratches and dings elsewhere, and mild handling wear. Mechanically excellent.
