This rifle is unmarked, but it is very similar to a known example marked by Weatherhead, Walters & Co. of Derby and multiple Pritchard marked examples (William Prichard of Birmingham), including one sold through our auction earlier this year. It dates to the second quarter of the 19th century. It has a beautiful Damascus barrel with post and notch sights, scrollwork and rabbit and deer scene engraving on the action, additional scrollwork on the other furniture, rosette engraving on the screws, a lever on the left side for rotating the breechblock, silver wedge and thumb escutcheons, a dark horn forearm tip, checkered grip, and a large ball reservoir.
Fine overall with strong rebrowned finish and attractive Damascus patterns along the barrel, mottled dark gray patina and pitting on the iron, crisp engraving, brown patina on the reservoir, aged patina on the silver, and crisp checkering, minor cracks and scrapes, and some filler in voids in the grain on the re-varnished wood. The mechanism is mechanically excellent, but the seals are unlikely to work.
