This is a solid example of an early Model 1892 Krag rifle that has been arsenal converted into the Model 1896 configuration. The side of the receiver is marked "U.S. 1894, SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" next to the serial number and it has the updated stock with the plugged cleaning rod slot/hole, the second pattern front barrel band with double straps on top, the later bolt with the extractor with pin the receiver has also been altered for the extractor pin. Mounted on a straight grip, finger groove stock with a "SWP/1895" cartouche, and a double circled script "P" proof behind the trigger guard. The stock is fitted with the updated smooth buttplate with a curved toe, butt trap and short handguard that meets the front edge of the receiver, fitted with an 1896 rear sight. Includes a "SA/1906" marked bayonet with leather scabbard. Included is a vintage box of Winchester .30 Army ammunition.
Very good as arsenal updated to 1896 specifications. The rifle has traces of the aging blue finish on the barrel and patterns of the dark oil quenched casehardening on the receiver. The finish shows areas of aging to a smooth brownish patina, light spotting, general handling marks, and very clear markings. The extractor retains much of it's fiery nitre blue finish with some mild cycling marks. The bolt body and handle are bright with a smooth gray patina. The wood is fine, with an excellent 1895 cartouche, double struck circle "P", general handling marks and scattered small indentations throughout. Mechanically excellent. The ammunition box is fair with separated corners on the lid, and peeling labels. The ammunition itself is good with a reddish oxidized patina on the brass and clear markings on the cartridge heads.
