This is a fine example of the first Navy contract Model 1885 Remington-Lee bolt action rifle serial number 1. There were approximately 1,500 made for the Navy contract. The top of the receiver is marked "U.S.N./naval anchor/No. 1/H.E." The left top flat of the receiver is marked with the standard two line markings of " REMINGTON ARMS CO./ILLION N.Y. U.S.A./ SOLE MANUFACTURERS & AGENTS". The left side is marked "PATENTED NOV. 4TH 1879". The barrel is fitted with a 1879 Springfield rear sight graduated from 100-500 yards on the side of the base and 600-1,200 yards on the ladder and a military blade/bayonet stud front sight. It has a standard straight grip walnut stock with no visible markings. The cleaning rod is absent.
Fine, retains 60% original blue finish with the balance a smooth grey patina. The wood is fine with a semi-circular crack visible rear of top tang, minor dings and scratches scattered throughout. Mechanically excellent.
