A total of around 16,500 Joslyn carbines were manufactured during the Civil War under contract with the U.S. government in two models. Approximately 8,000 Model 1864 or "Second Model" carbines were purchased by the U.S. Government on contract with the Joslyn Fire Arms Company. Another 4,500 were sold on the commercial market. This model is easily identified by its use of a pull out latch on the breech. It has the standard markings and features, including matching serial numbers.
Fine overall with a plum brown blend of fading original blue finish and patina on the barrel, dark brown patina on the breechblock and hammer, mottled gray and brown patina on the balance, absent saddle ring, some scratches and marks on the wood and metal, a few small chips and flakes on the latter, and distinct markings. Mechanically excellent.
