The Model 1886 was one of the finest and strongest lever actions built by Winchester, and offered here is a beautiful, extremely high condition example. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with an octagon barrel in .40-65 caliber, plain trigger, "nice stock," and "good shooter" when received in the warehouse on December 22, 1890 and shipped the next day. The records list one return date: May 29, 1891. The barrel is stamped with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "40-65 W.C.F." at the breech. It is equipped with a dovetail beaded blade Lyman front sight and an elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-." The serial number and two-line patent dates marking are stamped on the lower tang. The magazine tube, bolt and barrel are blued, nitre blue on the loading gate, and the remaining surfaces are casehardened. Mounted on a nicely figured burl walnut select walnut forearm and straight grip stock. The buttstock is fitted with a crescent steel buttplate.
Excellent. The barrel, magazine tube and bolt retain 95% plus original blue finish with some thinning on the balance. Nearly 97% original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The remaining metal surfaces retain 97% vibrant original case colors with overcoat of varnish, scattered loss contained to the high edges. The wood is also excellent with some minor handling/storage marks. Mechanically excellent. This Model 1886 Rifle will be hard to improve upon! Overall a fantastic example of a highly desirable Model 1886 that will look great in any Winchester collection!
