This is a late WWII K98 rifle manufactured by the Mauser factory that has been assembled into a German high turret type sniper rifle and fitted with a "Kahles-Wein Heliavier" marked commercial scope. The left side of the receiver has a single "Eagle 135" acceptance proof. The with left side of both the receiver and barrel have a large a single "Eagle" firing proof. The receiver side wall has the block style "Mod. 98" markings. The rifle has all stamped components; barrel bands, trigger guard and floor plate with the barrel bands each secured to the stock with a single slotted wood screw with no bayonet lug. The parts are all unnumbered, and the trigger guard and floorplate both have a single "byf" manufacturer code. The barrel is marked "44 D 1" which indicates the rifle was probably manufactured in 1944. The barrel has a standard front sight and a tangent rear sight graduated 1-20 (100-2000) meters. It is fitted with a laminated stock and handguard with a cupped checkered buttplate. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with a faint "Eagle WaA135" Waffenamt proofmark. The blued scope tube is marked on the rear with partially covered "K. Kahles/Wein/H 4X60" and the elevation base is numbered "40803". The scope does not have any military proofs or acceptance marks. The left side of the scope rings have been renumbered "5956". It has the standard three post crosshair reticle. The elevation ring is marked 1-8 (100-800 meters). This rifle has a front sight cover, rubber muzzle cover, leather sling and a set of reproduction leather lens caps.

Rating Definition:

Fine as assembled with 60% of the dark gray phosphate finish overall showing edge and high spot wear mixed with browning brown patina and light oxidation/pitting on the barrel bands, trigger guard/floorplate, barrel and top of the receiver. The front exposed section of the barrel does show slightly more oxidation and pitting from handling. The stock and handguard are both in very good condition with a dark color overall mixed with minor handling marks on the sides and a faint acceptance proof. The scope retains 75% of an old refurbished blue finish with the ends of the scope having lost all of its black paint now showing a dull aluminum finish. The optics are clear.
