Description:Approximately 1,857 of these carbines were manufactured by Robbins & Lawrence in Windsor, Vermont, circa 1852-1855. They employ the Maynard patented primer tape system contained within a hinged trapdoor located on the right side of the lock, which on this example, is numbered to the gun on the inside of the trapdoor. They are also distinguishable by the hammer which is mounted inside the lock. These carbines were the first model of Sharp's carbine issued to the U.S. military, though this one bears no military markings, and they were the first model of Sharps to adopt the distinctive look that most models to follow would share. It has the standard markings and features of the sporting carbines including brass barrel band, buttplate, and patch box.
Rating Definition:Good with the metal a crisp mottled brown patina overall. The brass is attractive aged and "mustard yellow" in appearance. The refinished wood is fair with some minor dings and scratches, a missing chip on the tip of the forearm, and a sizeable crack near the upper tang. Some Maynard Primer components absent, otherwise mechanically fine.
