This model was also known as the John Brown Model due to a shipment of 200 of these revolvers sent to the controversial abolitionist in Kansas in 1857, and around 1,000 were manufactured in 1851-1857. The Maynard priming system was hoped to make the revolvers more marketable since the cylinders had to be manually revolved thanks to a patent infringement suit previously brought by Colt. The cylinder is revolved by hand after pressing a small button ahead of the trigger. The cylinder has a floral and naval themed etching, and scroll engraving adorns the hammer, lock, and frame. The top strap is marked "MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS," "NOV. 26, 1850" is marked on the front of the barrel latch, "MAYNARD'S PATENT SEP. 22, 1845" with eagle/shield motif is on door of the Maynard primer, and the back of the cylinder is marked "PATENT." The barrel latch and front of the cylinder pin have "731" (assembly number), and the serial number is marked on the recoil shield, underside of the lock, back of the frame on the left, front of the grip, and top of the back strap. It has a German silver blade front sight, notch rear sight, and smooth grip. It comes in a fitted hardwood case with a loading rod, combination tool, rare Mass. Arms Co. powder flask, Maynard primer tin with primers, and bullet mold; key, and small lead balls.
Exceptionally fine overall with 95% plus original blue finish, 80% of vibrant original case colors, brown patina on the balance, some minor marks and scratches, crisp engraving and etching patterns, legible markings, and mild overall storage wear. Mechanically fine. The case and accessories are all fine and have moderate storage wear. Overall, this is a very attractive cased set with an attractive and rare Massachusetts Arms Co. revolver and multiple rare factory accessories.
