This U.S. Springfield M1 Garand semi-automatic was delivered to Great Britain via Birmingham as a "Lend-Lease" military loan item. Blade front and peep rear sights, with a "BATTLE RANGE" elevation drum. The Springfield barrel is dated "12-41" (Pearl Harbor Attack!) and bears a full set of Birmingham Proof House markings beneath the operating rod. Fitted with a "D 28287-2 SA" Springfield bolt, "C46025-3 SA" trigger guard, "D28290-5 SA" trigger housing, "C46008-2 SA" hammer, "C 46015-6 SA" safety and "D 35382-3 SA" operating rod, with "REP 23" marked on the right receiver leg above the heat lot number. Smooth pistol grip stock, with a "S.A./G.H.S." cartouche and crossed cannons on the left side, circled serifed "P" on the underside of the wrist, brown leather sling dated "1918", nickel finished cleaning kit and a checkered buttplate.
Excellent, with 98% of the original parkerized finish, showing some bright wear on the high edges and the gas cylinder, cycling wear on the receiver and bolt, and a small amount of spotting and handling marks. The front sight screw plug is present, with a few light dings. The stock is very good, with some scuffs and dings overall, as well as some heavier dents concentrated on the left side around the cartouches (see photo). Mechanically excellent. One will look a long time to locate a finer example!
