The barrel rib is marked "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PAT. JULY 10. 60. JAN. 17. FEB. 17. JULY 11. 65 & AUG.24. 69. RUSSIAN MODEL" followed by "REISSUE/JULY 25.1871." "Reissue" marked Russians are commonly found in the 1-9,000 serial number range, presumably for commercial sales. This revolver appears to be an exception to the rule and was numbered in another contract. The accompanying factory letter notes the "reissue marking" and lists this revolver with a 7 inch barrel (currently 6 inches), nickel finish, butt swivel and smooth walnut grips when it was shipped to M.W. Robinson, New York City on October 26, 1875. Matching assembly number "47" is on the right side of the grip frame, cylinder, barrel and barrel latch. The serial number is stamped on the butt along with "SH" inside a diamond. The right grip is numbered to the gun. The open top leather holster is unmarked and is for an 8 inch barrel Colt SAA.
Very fine as period refinished and shortened barrel. The revolver retains 95% of the nickel finish with some minor-moderate high edge wear and some scattered minor flaking. The hammer and trigger guard retain 40% original case colors. The grips are fine showing some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The holster is fair with missing stitching.
