The Ordnance Department purchased 43,000 5th Model Burnside carbines during 1863-64 to arm cavalry units. It has standard 5th Model markings and features, including a pair of cartouches on the left side of the wrist.
Very good plus with mostly coarse brown patina and light oxidation, and strong original blue and niter blue finish remaining in the protected areas of the lower breechblock/lever assembly. A chip above the hammer, generally crisp markings, and some minor dings and scratches. The balance of buttstock is fine with crisp cartouches, the forend has a large indentation visible behind the barrel band. Mechanically excellent.
