Description:

This is a very fine original example of a WWII Model 1928A1 Thompson submachine gun manufactured by the Auto-Ordnance Company under contract for the U.S. Military that was later sold to the Macon Georgia Police Department. This is an interesting Auto-Ordnance variation that was produced by the Bridgeport facility and were later sold to various police agencies. As part of this sale, these weapons had the U.S. designation ground off and the "A1" mark over-stamped to read "AC" with most being refurbished and refitted with smooth blued barrels with the late pattern "L" style fixed rear sight. Most of these altered SMGs fall into a documented serial number range of 150,000 to 152,000 and also had a letter "X" added to the serial numbers. A small number also had their original military horizontal foregrip replaced with the early style vertical foregrip. It is believed that these were guns that had been purchased from the government by the Auto-Ordnance Corporation and refurbished in order to be sold to law enforcement agencies after they were surplused. This scarce example has a mix of blued and parkerized components and an all walnut buttstock and both pistol grip assemblies. This weapon was originally manufactured circa 1942 under military contract for the US Army as the front left side of the receiver is stamped with the U.S. Ordnance inspector initials "W.B." for Waldemar Broburg, over the Cross-Cannon Ordnance final inspection proof. It has some of the early and late wartime features such as the short 10 1/2 inch barrel with no-cooling fins, the late production non-adjustable "L" type, war-expedient Lyman rear sight, a blued "CUTTS" marked Thompson/Auto-Ordnance patented compensator, the vertical forend grip along with the detachable buttstock . The receiver is marked with "MODEL OF 1928 A1/NO. AO 150288X" and farther back "THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN/CALIBER .45 AUTOMATIC CARTRIDGE". The obverse is marked in two-lines "AUTO-ORDNANCE CORPORATION, BRIDGEPORT CONNECTICUT USA". The top of the receiver is stamped with the "Auto-Ordnance/Thompson Bullet" logo. The underside of the lower trigger housing is correctly numbered "AO 150288X". As noted, during the refurbishment and subsequent the "U.S." was ground off and the "A1" markings have been over-stamped with "AC" to denoted that this weapon was released for sale to law enforcement agency. It has the all walnut components such as the earlier vertical foregrip, standard pistol grip and buttstock. The left side of the buttstock is affixed with a small yellow decal which reads "PROPERTY OF/CITY OF MACON/ GEORGIA/923". This is a desirable Thompson SMG with both military and Police usage history. The consignor noted that his father purchased this SMG directly from the Macon Police Department upon his return from the service. It is complete with six extra magazines.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine with 85% of its combination blued and arsenal parkerized metal finishes overall with wear and scratches on the sides of the upper and lower receiver. The vertical grip and pistol grip are both in very fine condition with a dark walnut color while the buttstock is in very fine condition also with a dark walnut color but showing numerous light handling marks and pressure dents on the side from use. NOTE: This item is restricted as a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) that is classified as a "Curios or Relic" as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11.
