Description:

Measuring 9 1/2 inches wide and 13 1/2 inches tall, the frame is constructed from 92.5 percent pure silver, with a set of "FH/W" (Franz and Hermann Wandinger, Munich) hallmarks on the top, a leather back with a hinged door, a stepped-down profile on the front edges, and a 1 3/4 inch tall Greek key bordered panel on the bottom front bearing a raised Nazi Eagle flanked by the initials "A H". This appears to be a variant on Adolf Hitler's personal "Fuehreradler" logo, though with the wings spread instead of the more common closed wing style. The Wandinger Brothers supplied a great deal of silver items for Hitler's personal use, and their mark in conjunction with Hitler's eagle and key bordering can be seen on a full spectrum of household goods and tableware. Inside the frame is a printed portrait of Hitler, with a signed inscription; most of the text is essentially illegible, though appears to include the word "herzlich" (heartfelt), while a date of "1936" and Hitler's signature are clear. Though not documented, the first line appears to be the name "Margarete Slezak"; a singer and actress with a career spanning from Weimar Germany to post-War West Germany, Slezak is one of the women noted as being close to Hitler. Reports vary on just how close the two got, with some French reports from the era suggesting that they got very, very close, going as far as to name her one of his 'secret lovers'. Reports also place her as a mutual friend of Hitler and Leni Riefenstahl, noted maker of Nazi propaganda, famous for "Triumph of the Will" and related works, who also suffered accusations of being with Hitler both during and after the War. Both the frame and the particular portrait used have been seen on items intended as personal gifts from Hitler, though not all observed examples include any markings beyond the signature. Included with the set is a closely fitted red leatherette presentation case with cloth padding on the interior and a silver embossed Nazi eagle on the front.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The silver shows some light handling marks and a few areas of mixed patina, while the leather backing shows some wear and tear and some smudging and residue on the glass. The case shows similar wear, with some tearing of the hinge, corner separation and stains. The portrait shows a few small brown stains around the edges, as well as some creasing in the corners, with the image and text essentially unmussed. A similarly signed amber-covered presentation copy of Mein Kampf can be seen in Lot #1599.
