The first production firearms chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge, the Registered Magnum set a new standard in firepower and accuracy. Each Smith & Wesson Registered Magnum was built to the specifications of the buyer, then registered by number to the owner by Douglas Wesson himself, the then Vice President of Smith & Wesson. This particular Registered Magnum, number 3727, features a Call gold bead front sight, square notch rear sight, Magna stocks and standard S&W factory markings with "REG. 3727" stamped on the inside of the yoke. Matching serial numbers are found stamped in the ejector shroud, rear cylinder face, butt and right grip panel. The assembly number "12638" is stamped on the yoke and crane. This is one of 1,518 Registered Magnums manufactured with a 6 1/2 inch barrel. The accompanying factory letter confirms the registration number, barrel length, finish, Call gold bead front sight, square notch rear sight and Magna stocks. It was shipped on May 6, 1938, and delivered to Chown Hardware Co. of Portland, Oregon. The S&W invoice (photocopy) is also included. The Type II box carries the illustration of a Magnum fitted with Magna stocks. The box retains the small white label on the bottom that has the correct serial number and registration number ("56680/Reg-3737") as well as the original price of $60.00. Often this label is missing or illegible. The revolver was once part of the Garbrecht collection, and original ownership has been linked to Deputy Howard Kelly of the Multnomah County Oregon Sheriffs Office in 1938. Kelly was later chief of detectives and died in 1998. Provenance: Ray Cheely Collection and Chad Gripp collections.
Excellent plus. The revolver retains over 99% original blue finish showing a cylinder drag line. 99% plus original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger. The grips are also excellent plus with crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. The box is fine with some minor edge wear, a couple of stains and retaining most of the illustration.
