Manufactured in 1885 as a third model. The accompanying Cody Firearms Museum serial number research request confirms the caliber, octagon barrel and trigger and states it was shipped on October 12, 1887. The barrel has dovetail blade front and folding ladder "1876" marked rear sights, the two-line address/patent marking ahead of the rear sight and "40-60 WCF" at the breech. A long range peep sight is mounted to the tang. "40-60" is marked on the cartridge elevator. The assembly number "57" is marked on the tang and "171" on the buttplate. The highly figured replacement wood lacks an assembly number and has fine multi-point checkering and a crescent buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included).
Fine. The rifle retains 50% of the original blue finish with barrel vise marks visible on frame and barrel with the balance a smooth brown patina. The replacement, recheckered wood shows a series of minor pressure dents near the stock toe, otherwise a few minor handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
