This is a fine WWII J. P. Sauer and Son M30 Nazi Luftwaffe Survival Drilling that comes with three boxes (28 rounds) of original 9.3x72R ammunition. The M30 survival drilling was standard issue to Luftwaffe bomber crews circa 1941-43 intended to provided a high quality survival rifle in case of a forced landing. These combination three barrel drillings have a Greener type cross-bolt receiver/action with a side mounted safety lever and have double 12 gauge barrels over a 9.3x74R rifle barrel. The top tang has a sliding barrel selector catch, so when the rifle barrel is selected the rear rifle sight is raised and engages the forward trigger for firing the rifle barrel. They exhibit exceptional pre-war workmanship that includes: hand-fitted parts, high polish rust blue barrel finish, and a beautiful color casehardened finish remaining parts. The receiver, trigger guard, screw heads and forend attaching iron have all been beautifully factory engraved with a diminutive high quality scroll pattern engraving. The stock and forends are also select grade of European walnut. The underside of the barrel lug has a single "Eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance proof, and the rifle barrel has a single commercial "Eagle/N" proof. Each barrel is stamped with the bore/gauge/caliber markings and "12/65" and "641". The barrels have a matted rib with brass rifle bead front sight, and all three are marked: "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL". The right rear breech area of the shotgun barrel and the right side of the buttstock are both stamped with a large prominent Luftwaffe "Eagle/Swastika" insignia. The top left edge of the receiver rail, the rear of the lower tang and under side of the barrel set are marked with serial number "335916" and inside the forend it is numbered "5916". The underside of the receiver and right underside of chambers have the intertwined "SS" logo "Sauer & Son" factory, and both sides of the receiver are marked "J.P. SAUER & SOHN SUHL". The pistol grip area of the stock and both sides of the forend exhibit a beautifully executed hand checkered pattern. The stock has the typical, small European oval cheekpiece, a color casehardened grip cap, and a black plastic serrated buttplate that has the intertwined "SS" logo of the Sauer & Son factory in the center. As noted above, this drilling includes 28 rounds of original rifle ammunition; one box (10 rounds) of RWS ammunition with the H-Mantel bullet and 2 boxes (18) round of RWS, nickel plated military issue Funktionsprufuhgs (functional test) ammunition.
Fine with 85% blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear with some minor nicks and scratches on the barrel from general use and handling. The action, trigger guard and forend metal all retain 50% of their case colors with the balance turning a silvery gray patina. The stock and forend are both fine with a nice light, honey colored walnut showing numerous handling marks and scratches on the sides from actual field use. This example does have all matching numbers on the various parts. The LOP is 14 inches. A solid representative example of an honest WWII Luftwaffe M30 combination drilling.
