This is a good example of a late WWII German K98 Mauser low turret sniper rifle. These were manufactured at the same time as the high turret version only the scope was mounted approximately 1/4 inch lower on the rifle. The top of the receiver ring is covered by the turret however it is probably stamped "byf" over 43 or maybe 44. The receiver side wall has the block style "Mod.98" markings. The right and left sides of the receiver are stamped with a single "eagle/135" Waffenamt proof with an "eagle" firing proof on the barrel. It is fitted with an all blued Hensoldt scope marked on the side, "Dialytan 4X 72949/bmj/+". The scope is fitted with the low turret type mounts/rings with the front ring numbered "8762" on the edge, and comes with a reproduction rubber eye-cup. It has all stamped components; barrel bands, trigger guard and floorplate with all parts numbered to the rifle. The barrel has the standard inverted "V" front sight and the military tangent rear sight graduated to 2000 meters. It is fitted with the standard laminated wood stock and handguard and the stock has the late war cupped sheet metal buttplate with the takedown bolt through the buttstock. There is a very faint restamped Waffenamt proof on the right side with no visible serial number or other proof marks. It comes with a dark brown cross-hatched leather sling and a set of black reproduction lens caps with a restamped Waffenamt proof on the end.
Fine with 80% of the blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear with general thinning and blue loss on the exposed metal parts to include the barrel bands, trigger guard, floorplate and bolt handle. The stock and handguard are both in good condition having been cleaned. The scope and mounts retain have been nicely reblued, and show some very minor pin-prick type pitting under the blue finish, with clear distinct markings on the sides of the scope tube. The optics are clear. Interestingly the scope mount serial number (8762) is only 24 numbers from the rifle serial number.
