Manufactured in France likely during the latter half of the 19th century. Single brass bead sight on the smooth rib. Features detailed French scroll engraving with scalloped and foliate designs. The plates are marked "Brun" and "au/Donjon" on the left and right respectively. The barrels are fitted to the forearm with a single lightly engraved wedge. The buttstock is a unique side-folding design with a smooth steel buttplate. There are records of a Gallay C. Brun active in the Donjon area of France until at least 1853. Includes a brass tipped horn ram rod. Length of pull is 13 3/4 inches.
Fine. 75% original thin brown finish remains on the barrels with strong Damascus patterning, some small dings, mild edge wear, and faint pitting near the muzzle. The lock plates and fittings have a silver/gray patina overall with some light spotting, handling marks, and distinct markings and engraving. The wood is fine as revarnished with small dings and indentations throughout and a 1/2 inch hairline crack just to the rear of the hinge on top of the wrist. Mechanically very good.
