The lock is marked "X Gretsel/a Epinal" indicating manufacture in northeastern France near the border with Belgium. The barrel has an unclear gold inlaid marking on top (likely "Canon Tordu" indicating a "twisted" or Damascus barrel), gold inlaid border designs at the muzzle and breech, and a Liege proofmark on the left at the breech. The underside has "52" over a circle with a dot at the breech. The barrel is swamped, rifled, and fitted with a dovetailed brass blade front sight and a fixed notch rear sight. The pistol also has a single set trigger. It is possible this was part of a pair of dueling pistols given that non-adjustable sights, single set triggers, and rifling were common on French duelers. The various components have attractive engraving patterns including various animal designs. The stock has raised relief floral carving and interesting alternating hatch patterns on the wrist.
Fair with subtle case colors on the lock plate and hammer; a blend of dark brown patina, original, and some light pitting/oxidation on the barrel; brown and gray patina on the remaining metal parts; minor repaired cracks on the revarnished stock; and mostly crisp engraving and carving patterns. The lock and set trigger are mechanically fine.
