Description:This Model 1886 was manufactured in 1893. The top barrel flat is marked with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "38-56 W.C.F." at the breech. The upper tang is marked "--MODEL 1886--". The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are marked on the lower tang directly behind the trigger, and the serial number is at the end. It has a dovetailed blade front sight, adjustable buckhorn rear sight, blue barrel and full length magazine, casehardened remaining parts, and is mounted with a smooth forearm with steel forend cap and straight grip, highly figured walnut stock with a crescent steel buttplate. The accompanying Cody Museum Records Office sheet verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger, that it was received in the warehouse on March 11, 1893, and shipped in order number 2542 on October 24, 1893.
Rating Definition:Fine. The barrel and magazine tube have a smooth brown patina with traces of original blue finish in protected areas. The receiver retains 60% plus original vivid case colors with a smooth mottled gray patina on the underside. Most of the original case colors remain on the hammer, and the lever has a mottled gray patina with minor pitting. The revarnished forearm is very good with some scattered minor dents and dings. The buttstock is fine. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
