Standard Robbins & Lawrence U.S. contract rifle dated "1851" at the tail of the lock and re-bored for .58 caliber Minie balls with sabre bayonet stud on right side of barrel, near muzzle. The left side of the stock has "REX" hand carved near the butt. Many of the late production "Mississippi" rifles were used during the opening years of the Civil War, especially in the South.
Fair with cold blue mixed with dark brown patina and moderate pitting on the barrel, dark brown patina on the lock, dark aged patina on the brass, verdigris inside the patch box, some chips and slivers absent from the stock, material absent under the front barrel band, a crack at the rear lock screw, and numerous scratches and dings throughout. Mechanically excellent.
