This Winchester rifle has the standard Model 53 features (22 inch barrel, six-shot magazine, straight grip stock, shotgun buttplate and ramp type front sight), but the serial number (975520) falls into the Model 1892 range. As noted by Winchester expert and author George Madis, the serial number "indicates that it is a transitional rifle, made shortly after the Model 53 was introduced…Serial numbers of the Model 53 were in a separate series except in the case of some early issues such as this." Introduced in 1924, the 53 was essentially a re-branded Model 1892. The rifle has a beaded front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight and button magazine. The left side of the barrel has the model (53)/trademark/nickel steel/caliber information and the right side has the two line address. The upper tang has the three-line trademark information and the barrel and receiver have a factory proof at the breech.
Very fine. The rifle retains 90% plus original blue finish showing some thinning to a brown and freckling of blue on bottom of receiver. The buttplate is a smooth gray patina overall. The revarnished wood is fine with some minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
