This is a representative example of a standard WWII issue Japanese Type 97 sniper rifle that is complete with an original 2.5x sniper scope. This rifle was produced at the Chigusa factory under Nagoya Arsenal. The top of the receiver has a partial Royal Chrysanthemum (the center has been ground) with the Kana markings for "Type 97" still complete. It has an all blued metal finish with a bright polished bolt. It has the standard inverted "v" front sight and the late war style, all blued long staff tangent rear sight that does not have the anti-aircraft wings. The face of the sight is marked 4-24 (400-2,400 meters). It is fitted with the stamped unnumbered barrel bands with the rear barrel band equipped with the folding monopod block with the monopod still is attached. It has the two-piece type buttstock, with the finger grooves on the sides without the drain holes and it has a single short hand guard on top of the barrel with a flat steel buttplate. It is fitted with the earlier small type 2.5x power telescopic scope that is marked "2.5 X 10" (degrees) over the Japanese factory symbol and serial number "4479". The side of the scope base has the two Japanese Kana markings, and the base is numbered "790". It is complete with an original WWII Japanese blued cleaning rod, a leather sling and a brass muzzle cover.
Fine with 75% of the blued finish overall with edge and high spot wear with thinning on the trigger guard. The refinished stock and handguard are both in good condition with nice color overall showing typical handling marks and scratches on the sides with some heavy gouges in the lower toe area and left side of the buttstock in front of the buttplate. There are also some heavier marks on the right side of the wrist from being held in a rack or fixture. The stock and handguard also have had a very heavy coat of varnish applied overall the wood which has run down the sides in some areas and onto the metal parts. The scope retains 90% of it black painted type finish overall with some flaking and finish loss on the sides. The optics are fine but a little hazy.
