This is a solid example of a First Type Joslyn Model 1862 Civil War Carbine. Blade front and 3-leaf rear sights, with "T.K.L/W.P" on the left side of the breech and the three line patent markings on top of the swiveling breechblock. Lock plate is marked "JOSLYN FIRE ARMS CO./STONINGTON/CONN" ahead of the hammer. The matching serial number is marked on the top of the breechblock and on the upper tang. There is also a "P" on the upper tang and front and rear of the lower tang. Brass mountings and mounted with a smooth straight grip stock with a faint cartouche on the left side over the saddle ring bar and a "P" marked buttplate tang.
Good. The metal surfaces have a dark and mottled gray patina with scattered minor pitting. The brass has been cleaned some time ago and is beginning to age. The stock has been lightly sanded and remains good with some scattered minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
